The Shira-ishi rocks, located in the middle of the north basin of Lake Biwa, 5 km from the nearest lakeshore. They consist of a rhyolitic welded tuff. The lake is about 70 m deep in the area surrounding the rocks. The rocks are a favourite haunt of cormorants. (Photograph taken 28th July 2009.) (Click on the image to view the next in the series.)
