Lake Biwa is in central Japan (map) and is one of the world's few ancient lakes. It is also Japan's largest freshwater lake and it has shaped the natural and cultural history of the area for a long time.
The galleries of the Lake Biwa Museum explore the relationship between lakes and people, focusing on Lake Biwa and the changes that have occurred during its long history. The museum houses one of the largest freshwater aquariums in Japan, displaying many of the endemic species from the lake. The museum has a large research wing employing 30 research scientists and is also a fish breeding and conservation centre.
Facilities include a library, museum shop, restaurant, cafeteria and nursing room. Guide books, leaflets and headphone commentary are available in English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Portuguese.

 The ecology of exotic invading species: what facilitates spreading success? General overview and search for causes in exotic ostracod of the Iberian Peninsula

In order to find out patterns of invasion success of exotic aquatic invertebrates, we are investigating ecological traits of exotic non-marine Ostracoda on the Iberian Peninsula. Widespread species include some with asexual reproduction, others with sexual reproduction. Dispersal is facilitated by humans but also by other organisms, mainly birds. However, the most clearly emerging pattern appears to be that most exotic species start colonization in human impacted habitats.
